Laranja Original Publishing is recognized for its commitment to literature and the arts, producing around 20 books annually and maintaining a catalog that now exceeds one hundred published titles. Founded in 2016, the publisher’s mission is to promote cultural diversity through publications ranging from fiction to art magazines, featuring both renowned authors and emerging talents. Additionally, the publisher has earned prestigious awards such as the Jabuti and the Rio Grande do Sul Academy of Letters Award, solidifying its relevance in the Brazilian and international literary scene.

I had the privilege of collaborating with Laranja Original Publishing as an editorial designer, contributing to two special projects: the “Three Studies on Antiquity” collection and the eighth edition of the Literature and Art Magazine. This partnership not only allowed me to apply my expertise in editorial design but also helped strengthen the publisher’s visual narrative, aligning the graphic design with the literary and artistic intentions of each work.

The “Three Studies on Antiquity” collection, reimagined classics by Filipe Moreau, offers a unique approach to three great epics of world literature. Currently consisting of Mahabharata and Odyssey, with the third volume forthcoming, this series reflects a meticulous effort in research and cultural interpretation, bringing the texts to a contemporary audience while preserving the charm of their original narratives. Each volume celebrates the identities and stories that shaped entire civilizations, transporting readers to worlds of heroism, love, magic, and philosophical reflection.

The creative process for the collection involved designing a unified graphic project and meticulously laying out each book, respecting the identity and historical-cultural context of each work. Moreau aimed to preserve the epic nature and richness of the original narratives while providing an accessible and enjoyable reading experience. This graphic work blends tradition and modernity, reinforcing the universal character of the stories.

For the cover design, I explored the symbolism of colors to evoke the spirit of the narratives. The vibrant orange of Mahabharata represents the spiritual energy and mystical depth of the Indian epic. Meanwhile, the blue of Odyssey reflects the infinity of the sea and the mythical universe of the Greek world. The color of the third volume remains a mystery, awaiting its reveal to complete the visual identity of the collection.

The first volume of the collection delves into the rich Indian epic tradition. Mahabharata tells the story of the succession dispute between the Pandavas and the Kauravas, culminating in a war that symbolizes a cosmic battle between good and evil. The text addresses profound questions about ethics, morality, and the pursuit of self-knowledge, exploring the three goals of life – kama (pleasure), artha (wealth), and dharma (moral duty). In addition to being an epic of heroism and war, it is a spiritual and philosophical work that has become a cornerstone of Hinduism. The reimagined version by Moreau offers an accessible and poetic perspective on this monumental text, transporting the reader to the mystical heart of ancient India.

The second volume of the collection is dedicated to the Greek classic attributed to Homer. Odyssey tells the saga of Odysseus, a cunning hero who faces gods, monsters, and fate itself in his long journey back to Ithaca after the Trojan War. The work is a profound portrait of the human condition, presenting themes of love, glory, longing, and overcoming challenges. Filipe Moreau revives the narrative with sensitivity and precision, highlighting the balance between mythical fantasy and the realism of everyday descriptions. His adaptation emphasizes the universality of the epic, which continues to fascinate readers with its poetic beauty and emotional depth.
